Google Keyword

The Google Keyword Tool is one of the best free tools for any website owner to use, so let’s look at how we do this.

  1. Open up Google keyword tool in your web browser, if you don’t know where it is then go to google.com and type in google keyword tool and it will be the 1st thing to show up.
  2. For the best results you should click the “Sign In” button on the top right, this will give you the best results. If you don’t have an account then you can register with your existing email or create a new one through gmail.
  3. On the left hand side of the screen, put a check mark beside the “[Exact]” box. You might have to scroll down a bit to see this box.
  4. Now type in your keyword in the word or phrase box in the center of the page.
  5. Click on the “keyword ideas” box right below that is shaded a light green, and click on search.
  6. From here you should be able to see the drastic difference between the broad and exact keywords. (The exact keywords have brackets around them)
  7. Make sure that it is showing “Approximate CPC” and “Local Search Trends” in the columns. If you don’t see them, then click on the “Columns” box on the top right and put a check mark beside their boxes and click the “Apply” button.
  8. To narrow down your search, click on the “” box above the results.

Description of the results:

Competition – This will be either Low, Medium or High. Low meaning that it is easier to show up in results for the keyword and High means it will be much harder to show up in results for the keyword.

Global Monthly Searches – The results from around the world.

Local Monthly Searches – The results from the country you are in.

Approximate CPC – What you would typically pay to show up on page 1 Google sponsored ads. CPC stands for Cost Per Click.

Local Search Trends – This shows a graph for how much the keyword was searched in the last 12 months. Each bar represents a month.

Many of our clients tell us they are on page 1 Google for their search term and then we show them on Google Keyword tool how often it is searched through the Exact method. Like we said in the Small Business SEO article, ““boutiques atlanta georgia” is searched less than 5 times a month, but “boutiques in atlanta ga” is searched 210 times a month. I believe any business owner would know how much it could be hurting them to be showing up under the wrong keyword.
